Lower power consumption, great performance, entry level pricing, there’s a lot to like about he Seagate Barracuda LP 2 Terabyte drive.
The idle power consumption on this “Green” drive is barely more than some LED power lights you see on common electrical appliances (Some LEDS operate at 3.3w). To that end we’re going to take a look at the Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB 5900 RPM drive that consumes only 3.88 Watts Idle and 6.88 Watts during drive operations. Hard Drive suppliers have recognized this and have alternative “Green Drives” available for those that want to have good performance, tons of storage, and keep utility costs down. Putting a high power consumption drive into one of those just doesn’t make a lot of sense. Take an HTPC which often stays turned on 24 hours a day, they don’t need an ultra fast 10k RPM drive, they just need a drive that can handle recording one show while playing back a HD show. It’s just a fact that in some cases power consumption is more important than raw speed. Network storage that tends to run in the 30MB/s range running an expensive 3.5 inch 10,000 RPM drive because they thought it would make it faster. Far to many times we’ve heard of high end parts being used for external hard drives limited by USB speeds, Copiers with ultra fast drives that just don’t need them. We’re seeing “Green” components that don’t contain as many heavy metals that damage the environment as past products, as well as parts that sip at voltage but still provide nice levels of performance. I also haven't unplugged all of the other drives (except SSD for OS and Blue for the test), to see if my mobo is having issues or something. I haven't thought to format the Blue yet, so I will try that tonight. Tried 5 other games, they had the same issue, but CS:GO it happened the most consistently. Ran Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, found no issues.Ĭontacted WD support who tried to tell me I can't do gaming on a Blue. Yes they loaded slow, but they never froze consistently like this. Neither the Green 1TB, nor the super old seagate had a freezing issue. I've also had games installed on my super old Seagate. Load times feel 3x faster on Blue, and according to CrystalDiskMark it's 2.5x faster. So needless to say, the performance is way, way better on my Blue. Keep in mind that before I put my games on the Blue HDD, I had the majority of my games installed on a WD Green 1TB (with the exception of CS:GO and DOTA2, which were on my SSD). I had only used it to stream media, then I moved all of that content off, and installed all of my steam/origin games on it. I purchased a WD Blue 4TB HDD a couple of months ago. Old games from 2009 up to new games 2017 all have the same issue every couple of minutes there is a 1 second freeze. I have a WD Blue 4TB drive that I use for gaming, and just purchased it a couple of months ago.
